Reviving Spaces: The Cha Fa Residence

Golden Kao and Sinna Kao's Innovative Design for Multi-Generational Living

Golden Kao and Sinna Kao, renowned designers, have breathed new life into a 40-year-old house in Xindian, Taiwan, with their award-winning design, Cha Fa. The design is a testament to their innovative approach to multi-generational living, blending Eastern and Western styles, and creating a space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

The inspiration for Cha Fa came from the desire to create a space that is not only spacious and conducive for multi-person gatherings but also anticipates the needs of future living. The design team has seamlessly blended elements from different cultures and eras, creating a unique space that pulls from the past while looking towards the future. The design's unique properties lie in its core concept of space superposition, drawing inspiration from the Ark concept of the Bible, creating a multi-use space in a limited public area.

Cha Fa's realization is a blend of Eastern and Western styles, with simple Shimizu mold and seamless floor as the base. The design includes simple lines, geometric designs, greenery, and an elegant French tone. The kitchen stands out with white marble pattern laminate hard plastic sheet and Prussian blue cabinets, creating a visual highlight. Synthetic fiber tatami and wooden vocabulary add a modern Japanese style to the design.

The 80m2 house originally suffered from a poor layout and lighting. The design team decided to open up the space to link each functional area, using a ceiling window to connect the indoor and outdoor spaces. Natural sunlight and greenery are brought into the space, linking modern and natural styles and creating a relaxing and intriguing aesthetic texture. The residents can now enjoy the fabulous outdoor green wall from any place in the house.

Cha Fa is designed for interaction. The design team broke through traditional thoughts of founder pattern, aligning the main television wall, tatami room seats, and corner wood storage wall on the same axis. This connects the living room and dining room into a shared living area, widening the space and providing great comfort for television viewing.

The design project, completed and exhibited on 20th September 2017 in New Taipei City, faced challenges in catering to the different preferences of the young homeowners and their parents. The design team succeeded in blurring the boundaries and bringing together two generations of occupants living together with enjoyment. This design was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019, a testament to its outstanding expertise and innovation.

In conclusion, Cha Fa is a testament to the innovative design approach of Golden Kao and Sinna Kao. The design team has successfully transformed a 40-year-old house into a space that is not only functional and aesthetically pleasing but also anticipates the needs of future living. The design is a blend of Eastern and Western styles, creating a unique space that pulls from the past while looking towards the future.
